How to order MTO food at Sheetz

Published March 2026 Updated 24 June 2026 8 min read

The Sheetz touchscreen defeats a surprising number of first time visitors, and it is not because the screen is badly designed. It is because nobody tells you the two rules that make it obvious: you cannot order MTO food at the register, and the screen always works in the same order.

Learn that sequence once and the whole 307 item board opens up. This walkthrough covers the flow from the first tap to collecting the order, plus the four things regulars do that are not signposted anywhere.

Everything here applies to the in store kiosk and to the Sheetz app, which run the same board at the same prices.

The flow, in the order the screen thinks

Every MTO order follows the same six steps. Category first, then the base build, then size, then bread or base where the item has one, then the topping and sauce list, then confirm. The screen will not let you skip forward, and it will not let you go back more than one step, so the useful habit is deciding the category before you touch it.

The topping list is the long step and it is where the time goes. Most standard toppings are free and the screen marks anything that carries a charge before you add it. If you want the build exactly as designed, there is a confirm option that skips the whole list.

At the end you get a receipt with an order number. That number appears on the pickup screen when the kitchen finishes, and it is the only thing that matters from that point. Pay at the register or in the app, either works and neither affects the queue position.

Where first timers get stuck

The most common one is queueing at the register with a food order in mind. The register cannot place an MTO order and staff will point you back to the kiosk, which costs you your place in both queues.

The second is not knowing that breakfast is on the screen at every hour. People look for it in the morning categories at 8 PM, do not find a breakfast section where they expect it, and conclude it is unavailable. It is there, all day, every day.

The third is the size step. Several builds default to the smaller size and the price on the menu board is that size. A build listed at $9.19 steps up on both price and calories if you take the larger option, and the screen shows both before you commit.

Four things regulars do

Order the bowl. Any burrito can be ordered as a bowl at the same price. Burrito Bowl is $6.79 and 129 calories against 300 calories for the wrapped version. Same filling, same cost, fewer calories.

Ask for a melt instead of a hot sub. The melt format is usually a dollar cheaper for the same filling. Brisket Melt at $4.99 against Brisket Sub (hot) at $7.99 is the clearest case.

Reduce the syrup on coffee builds. The Coffeez bar takes reduced pump counts, which cuts a large share of the calories on a flavoured drink at no change in price.

Schedule the order in the app. Ordering ahead with a set pickup time avoids the two rush windows entirely, and it costs the same as walking in. The app guide covers the setup.

How long it actually takes

Four to six minutes for a single build on a normal shift. Eight to ten between 6 AM and 9 AM and again between 4 PM and 7 PM, which are the two windows where the kitchen is genuinely stacked. Overnight is the fastest time of day at most stores.

Fried items take longer than assembled ones, so a sub arrives before a basket of Chicken Shnuggetz - 8. If you are ordering for several people, the party tray calculator will size it and the hours page covers when to arrive.

Our take

Is the touchscreen worth learning?

Yes, and it takes one order. The screen is the only way to reach a 307 item kitchen that runs around the clock, and once the sequence is familiar an order takes about ninety seconds to place.

The alternative is the packaged cooler, which is fine and considerably less interesting. If you only ever use Sheetz for coffee and a bag of something, the kiosk is irrelevant. If you want the food this chain is actually known for, it is the front door.

Questions on this guide

Can you order Sheetz MTO food at the register?
No. MTO orders go through the in store touchscreen or the Sheetz app. The register is for paying, and staff will send you to the kiosk if you try to order there.
How long does a Sheetz MTO order take?
Four to six minutes on a normal shift, eight to ten during the morning and evening rushes. Fried items take longer than assembled ones, and overnight is usually the fastest time of day.
Do you pay before or after ordering at Sheetz?
After. Place the order at the kiosk, take the receipt to the register, and collect when your number appears on the pickup screen. Paying in the app skips the register step entirely.
Can you customise every MTO item?
Most builds carry the full topping and sauce list, and standard additions are free. Items named made to order, create or build your own open the longest option lists. Our off menu page covers the combinations worth trying.
